Have fun

I t’s March, people. March. Two months of 2013 have gone already. So how has your year been so far?

Given the number of hours in a day, I think we’re doing pretty well. Greg is still alive, mostly, and the rest of the band are still tolerating my crazy notions of what we should be doing as a band.

Time really does fly when you’re having fun though… the other night there was a thunderstorm here in Maritzburg, so Greg and I abandoned vocals and guitar and fiddled around recording thunder booms and falling rain… in stereo…

Sigh. Good times. Problem was it was midnight before we knew it!

I have since been thinking about having fun… would you describe your life as fun? If not, why?

I’m involved in a number of projects all over the place. It’s very easy to have goals and be swept up in the seriousness of progression, of advancing… we all want to achieve stuff, we all want to reap the rewards of the things we sew into… and I’ve observed how much the seriousness of that overwhelms people.

In my own life, I’m surrounded by many people who have very serious ambitions. They have big goals, big dreams, great vision. But I also have the benefit of a few close friends who understand that having fun is a very serious business.

I love the way Ecclesiastes 8:15 puts it:

So I commend the enjoyment of life, because there is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad. Then joy will accompany them in their toil all the days of the life God has given them under the sun.

So who says you can’t just stop singing and go set up the mics by the doorway and record the rain and the thunder?

Life is short. Have fun.
